The children have been busy working on this weeks challenges. They have enjoyed using playdough to make a plant. They had to make sure that their plant had a stem, leaf, roots and flower.
They have also been designing a new hat for the witch in our Litercay hook ‘Room on the Broom’.
The children have been enjoying listening to the story ‘Room on the Broom’ by Julia Donaldson. So far they have made props to help them retell the story in groups, acted out the story and written a character description of the witch.
If you have the story at home maybe you could read it together?
What is your favourite part of the story? Why?
Who is your favourite character why?
This week in our RE lesson we have been learning about special books. We discussed books that are special to us, such as stories. Mrs Duba shared one of her favourite stories with the class. We talked about some special religious books such as the Bible. Some of the children shared what they know about the Qur’an and why it is special to them.
The children worked on computers to draw a picture of their special book and write about why it was special to them.
This week in our grammar lesson the children had a jumbled up sentence. We identified the nouns and the verb and used this information to help us put the sentence in order. The children had a go at ‘holding the sentence’ in their head and writing it down. They had to remember to put in the capital letter and full stop.
This week we have been finding out about what Christians believe about the Easter story. The children listened carefully to the story and were encouraged to ask for words clarifying if they didn’t understand them. We came across lots of new vocabulary such as disciple, tomb and risen and discussed what they meant. The children enjoyed having a go at an online activity to sequence pictures and captions from the story.
Well done Year 1ED! Everyone did an excellent job in our class assembly this morning! Miss Edwards and I are feeling really proud. Thank you so much if you were able to come and watch. If you were not able to make it see if you can solve our animal riddle:
My wings are used as flippers
So in water I can flow
Sometimes when on land I slide
On my belly in the snow
What animal am I?
This week Miss Edwards and I are really proud of the writing that Year 1ED have produced following the visit from Lester the dog. Miss Edwards modelled how to use the information about Lester to help them write paragraphs. The children discussed the fact that ‘appearance’ means what something looks like and ‘diet’ means what something eats.
As part of our science topic we visited Tropical World on Tuesday. The children had fun observing the different animals in the different habitats and discussing whether the animals were mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds or fish.
In the afternoon we took part in a workshop and found out about which animals were herbivores, carnivores or omnivores. We discussed the meaning of the words ‘predator‘ and ‘prey‘ and built food chains.
Can you remember what these words mean?
As part of science week Year 1 ED had special visit from Miss Edward’s dog Lester on Monday. The children used our class checklist to help them prove that Lester is a mammal. We talked about Lester’s appearance and diet. This information will be useful when it comes to writing our non-chronological report about dogs.
Mr Kay has set Year 1ED a challenge on Mathletics. Complete the work that has been set on addition and subtraction to be in with a chance of winning a prize on Thursday 14th March!
Some of us have had a go in challenge time today. Now see how you get on at home!
