This week we have been comparing the mass of objects. We thought about whether the mass of an object is heavier than, lighter than or the same as the other object. We investigated various objects using a set of scales before recording our work in our journals.
Yesterday Year 1ED enjoyed a visit to Leeds Grand Mosque. It was a very informative morning and the children had lots of interesting questions that they wanted to find out the answers to. The questions started as we entered the Mosque with the children asking ‘Why do we need to take our shoes off?’, ‘Why is there a carpet?’ Luckily there were lots of people on hand to answer any questions and explain more about the Islamic faith. Thank you very much! Some of the children had the opportunity to try on different outfits that Muslim people around the world might wear and explore how outfits may change depending on cultural differences.

This week the children have been learning to identify human and physical features in our school grounds.
Some of the children have been learning to tell the time at home! Thank you!
This week in maths we have been busy learning to tell the time to o’clock and half past. The children have been working on explaining their reasoning e.g. I know it is 3 o’clock because the long hand is pointing to the 12 and the short hand is pointing to the 3.
We have also been using vocabulary related to time focusing on before, next and after.
Practice telling the time to o’clock and half past at home. You can email myself and Mrs Amblin any photos to show this! You could ask an adult at home help you find some good online games linked to telling the time.
Extra challenge: Why is being able to count in 5s a useful skill to have when you are learning to tell the time?
To start our new geography topic Year 1 ED have exploring the school grounds. The children worked with a learning partner and wrote a list of what they could see on a clipboard.
The children were very excited when they arrived in class today as some of the beans that they have planted have started to grow! We used our science skills to make careful observations of how the beans have changed and thought about why they have changed. The children made suggestions such as ‘they have sunlight’, ‘we have watered them’. We discussed the fact that some of the beans have not changed yet and that we need to make sure that we do not add too much water.
The children have been busy working on this weeks challenges. They have enjoyed using playdough to make a plant. They had to make sure that their plant had a stem, leaf, roots and flower.
They have also been designing a new hat for the witch in our Litercay hook ‘Room on the Broom’.
The children have been enjoying listening to the story ‘Room on the Broom’ by Julia Donaldson. So far they have made props to help them retell the story in groups, acted out the story and written a character description of the witch.
